Mountain Lion Attacks Hiker in California

A 70-year old man was hiking with his wife at Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park on Wednesday when he was attacked by a mountain lion. His wife basically saved his life by beating the cougar with a stick and stabbing it with a pen. Game wardens closed the park and sent dogs to track the lion and eventually tracked and killed a pair of mountain lions. The man underwent surgery for lacerations on his head and body and is currently in fair condition

A comment I made on Kings Outdoor World Blog and a response:
I attended a meeting several years ago where the California Director of wildlife resources was a guest speaker. He stated that Utah would soon be in the same boat as California relative to lions – if Utah did not wake up and smell the roses. His words were prophetic.
He had just come from escorting a husband to the kill scene where a lion had killed the man’s wife and had partially eaten her – the husband was to identify the remains. The woman was jogging on a trail near LA. The husband sued the Division and the Director for not controlling the lions. Lion management was taken from the Director’s hands by way of proposition, but he was still held responsible.

I finally moved out of Calif in late 2006. Part of the reason was because of all the liberal tree-hugging nuts that have taken over Calif. These same nut cases are the ones responsible for banning trapping and the hunting of cougar in Calif.. Since these bans went into effect there has been a huge increase in human attacks by lions and a drastitic decrease in upland game bird poulations due to the out of control populations of coyote (trapping ban). I would routinely see 3 or more skinny coyotes walking around in broad daylight while duck-hunting in the Calif delta region. I moved to Oregon and plan to kill as many cougar as I legally can in the coming years. I’m going bear hunting in a couple of days and will get a bear. Bears have destoyed up to 30% of the timber in certain areas of southern Oregon. Cougar hunting with dogs was banned by the liberal animal-lovers (baby-killers) in Oregon a few years ago. Now the cougar population has tripled and deer and elk herds are on the decline. Cougar kill an estimated 1 deer/elk/livestock animal week or nearly 500000 animals annually in Oregon

In response to the *&$%^[man] who was going bear hunting then I really hope the bear eats you first!
Do you [someone] not think there are other conservation measures that can be adapted to control the range of mountain lion. These animals aren’t found in huge numbers. We [some of us] want to keep biodiversity in all areas of the world as rich as possible. Who gives humans the divine right to control everything which doesn’t suit them. We are part of the living ecosystem and it’s our [some of us] job to maintain it

If the bear killed the *&$%^hunter, in accordance with your wishes, what would that do to biodiversity? If we could all agree on the definition for biodiversity, and we can’t, some of us would want it and some wouldn’t. What makes biodiversity rich? Would it be more or less rich without one *&$%^ hunter? You kind of seem to be in charge, or want to be…..how did you get the right to control everything? How many lions would it take for you to say there are enough, since you have assumed the role of decision maker? I am afraid there are a few loopholes in your “unbiased” opinion.

The odds of being killed by a mountain lion are so small that anyone who blames liberals for giving these great cats a chance is a major-league idiot. You will most certainly die in a car crash, of cancer, a gun shot, of heart attack, a stroke, or 100 other causes long before a mountain lion disemblowels you on a trail. Focus on what’s important. These animals and animals also on the decline like sharks and ocean fish will seriously impact our ability to maintain control over this planet’s ecosystems and more importantly, the planet’s microorganisms. Instead of spending 15 minutes listening to Rush, take that time to review what happens when ecosystems break down – disease strolls into the new void and quickly mutates to impact the human race. There are plenty of moronic liberals trying to “save the planet.” However, there are also cold hard facts associated with things like loss of biodiversity. It takes very little time to read up on these things, just make sure you read from peer-reviewed sources or authors that have developed theories via international peer review.

Per the admin comment, a mountain lion killing a person, or for that matter even 1,000 people a year has no impact on biodiversity. Biodiversity is already defined. If you don’t agree with it, that’s your issue, perhaps like thinking the world is flat. People die in huge numbers every day around the globe, primarily from things like malaria, parasites, AIDS, starvation, war, murder, heart attack, stroke, cancer, car accidents, the list goes on for a long time before you get to “mountain lion.” Biodiversity is a reality. If folks choose not to believe in it, that’s fine, however, the effects are real, like it or not. Every time you lose a species, new life moves into that slot, and with that move comes new diseases, and new microbes. All the tough talk and guns in the world don’t save you from a microbe, and that goes for Ted Nugent too – it goes for everyone.
500000 animals anually in Oregon. In the hunting seasons that Americans have, we kill more than that in a few weeks. Plus, not too many people are attacked by cougars. I do feel sadness for the man who lost his wife, but, really? We have DESTROYED their habitat, what do you expect?
Cougar habitat is deer (surprise). We have not destroyed the deer, the cougars have. Cougars have been protected and have overrun their habitat (deer), and now they are using elk as a substitute. Therefore, the cougars are not declining but the deer are. Cougars are killing 10 times the number of deer that hunters are killing and the subsequent harvest reductions are being applied to hunters not to cougars.
